Abstract:
The issue of cyberbullying is related not only to traditional forms of bullying but also to problems such as internet addiction, juvenile delinquency, and victimization through crimes committed by adults online, including grooming.
While many researchers and leading practitioners tend to focus on specific aspects of these problems, in school settings, it often seems more effective to address them comprehensively.
Together with my colleagues, I have supported an initiative called the “Smartphone Summit.” This is not an approach where adults identify the reality and impose countermeasures; rather, it is one in which adults aggregate the results of surveys conducted among children, and based on these results, the children themselves engage in discussions, consider what they should do, propose actions, and implement them.
This is a form of “collective self-regulation” conducted with the intention of valuing the agency of children.
Going forward, we hope to develop and implement a system that combines collective and individual self-regulation. Specifically, we aim to introduce a self-monitoring mechanism in which data collected through digital devices is aggregated in real time, allowing each child to recognize their own position within overall trends and adjust their behavior accordingly.

Jonathan Yainishet, M.A. is PhD Candidate at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology and The Ethnographic Collection, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

Abstract:
The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) presents a distinctively complex research landscape, where visibility and mobility are stringently yet inconsistently regulated. This regime of access and denial complicates ethnographic fieldwork, transforming the DMZ into a site of partial, selective, and unreliable perceptibility. In this talk, I offer methodological reflections drawn from long-term research on speculative futures in the DMZ, focusing on how researchers must grapple with the pervasive problem of absence. The DMZ embodies absence in two senses: as a spatially demarcated but largely inaccessible space, and as a landscape whose envisioned futures remain speculative. A further challenge is that this lack of access is shared by both researchers and interlocutors, diverging from traditional debates on distance and co-location in ethnography. Methodological discussions acknowledge absence as a challenge. This talk builds on these by engaging explicitly with future-oriented affective practices in the DMZ—aspirations that have not materialized and are “not there (yet).” In response to these conceptual challenges, I introduce a set of geometric metaphors—the asymptote and the parallel—to conceptualize how absence and aspiration are negotiated within the DMZ. This approach offers a methodological framework for approximating and engaging with affective futures in recalcitrant research landscapes such as the DMZ.

Im SoSe 2025 begrüßt das IN-EAST den Kollegen Daniel Koss, PhD (Harvard University)
Daniel Koss war für die World Bank und das Auswärtige Amt tätig, bevor er sein Studium in Harvard aufnahm und dort promovierte.
Nach einer Station am Institute of Political Science an der Academia Sinica in Taiwan kehrte er an die Universität Harvard zurück und arbeitet dort nun als Associate Senior Lecturer und Research Scholar.
Er hat einschlägig sowohl zur VR China als auch zu Japan publiziert.
Am IN-EAST wird Daniel Koss u.a. seine Arbeit an einem Buchmanuskript zur Geschichte politischer Parteien in Japan fortsetzen.
Dabei wird er durch die Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung mit einen “Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers” unterstützt, dass er gemeinsam mit Prof. Axel Klein beantragt hatte.

Recherchen der New York Times zur chinesischen buddhistischen Bewegung Falun Gong und zu deren Zeitung Epoch Times (print und online) wurden anlässlich der Tanzshows von Shen Yun in Mülheim von Jan Böhmermann in seiner Sendung ZDF-Magazin Royale aufgegriffen, so dass auch in Deutschland die Vorwürfe gegen Falun Gong bekannter wurden: Falun Gong habe sektenähnliche Strukturen, beute ihre Mitglieder (u.a. die TänzerInnen) aus und verbreite reaktionäre Fake News, Aberglauben und menschenverachtende Ansichten. Daran ändere auch nichts die Tatsache, dass Falun Gong von der repressiven chinesischen Regierung verfolgt wurde.

The DFG Research Training Group 2833 East Asian Futures: Visions and Realizations on National, Transregional and Global Scales offers seven 0,75 TV-L E13 positions at Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen for Doctoral Research (m,f,x) from Oct 1, 2025 till Sep 30, 2029.

The interdisciplinary Research Training Group GRK 2833 solicits doctoral dissertations for research on East Asian projections and conceptions of the future: how they emerged, on what premises they were based, and how they have been and continue to be applied to the paradigmatic fields of (1) language, religion, and ideology, (2) self and society, (3) resources and technology, and (4) sovereignty and governance. The temporal focus is on the modern and contemporary periods. The relevant fields of research are

The participating researchers cooperate and coordinate their activities in the Alliance for Research on East Asia (AREA) Ruhr. Scope of the programme
The interdisciplinary Research Training Group GRK 2833 solicits doctoral dissertations for research on East Asian projections and conceptions of the future: How they emerged, on what premises they were based, and how they have been and continue to be applied to the paradigmatic fields of (1) language, religion, and ideology, (2) self and society, (3) resources and technology, and (4) sovereignty and governance. The temporal focus is on the modern and contemporary periods.

The fellowship positions are limited to the finalization of the candidate’s doctoral studies or a maximum of four years. The doctoral fellows are expected to apply for and secure external funding prior to or at the same time as applying for the doctoral fellowship in the Research Training Group GRK 2833 East Asian Futures (such as DAAD or other scholarships). The candidate’s applications for external funding will be supported by GKR 2833 and assisted if necessary. Upon admission, they are eligible for support of their fieldwork by travel grants of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for associated doctoral researchers in the Research Training Group GRK 2833 East Asian Futures. The doctoral studies will be conducted at the Faculty of East Asian Studies at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), respectively its constituting faculties, with periods of fieldwork and archival/library research in East Asia. The participating researchers cooperate and coordinate their activities in the Alliance for Research on East Asia (AREA) Ruhr.

The English-language doctoral programme includes a structured curriculum and close guidance by experienced researchers while at the same time fostering early academic independence and creativity by providing support for conducting, presenting, and publishing the results of the RTG members’ research.

Doctoral researchers will be supervised by two professors affiliated with the East Asian Studies Departments of both universities. Abstract:
Datong Music Society, founded by Zheng Jinwen (1872–1935) in Shanghai in 1919, was a major Chinese music organization that proactively responded to the cultural reform movement of the time. For decades, Datong was known for modeling new Chinese instrumental practices upon standardized Western settings, including changing the pitch setting (temperament), expanding the range of tones (register) and volume, and adopting the orchestral style for its ensemble. While these Western-inspired changes have lasting impact on Chinese music reform, recent discoveries of Datong’s archaistic styled instruments suggest an opposite direction of revival, one that prompts new reflections on modernity.
Among the recent discoveries is a set of Datong instruments donated to the Deutsches Museum in Munich in 1925, which I confirmed with the help of the music curator Silke Berdux in 2023. The archaism of the gift set, which was a style common among Datong instruments production in its prime, afforded Datong to be known as the “spokesperson” of classical, or “ancient” (gu) Chinese music. Drawing from the concept of “exhibitory modernity” and reviewing Zheng’s views of history and exhibit, this talk will present Datong as a practical bearer of “heritage” in Chinese musical modernity during the interwar period. Unlike the preservationist notion of “heritage,” however, Datong challenges us to re-envision “heritage” as displaying purposefulness of the modern. Looking closely at its selected pieces, Datong’s instruments indeed showed a variety of creative styles.
A comparison with the “early music revival” happening almost simultaneously in the West helps illustrate Datong’s peculiar approach. Instead of applying fidelity in making early musical instruments in order to produce historical sounds, Datong was more interested in integrating the past with the present, bringing together revival and reform in seeking its futuristic vision of “datong” (lit. great unity), when Chinese music becomes a music of the world with its own national style.

About the speaker:
Joys H.Y. Cheung (Ph.D. in Musicology/Ethnomusicology, University of Michigan; M.M. in Ethnomusicology, University of Texas) is an Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Ethnomusicology, National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei. Her research has focused on the field of “music” in Chinese modernity emerging from interwar Shanghai, including issues of translated modernity, networks, the sublime, qin listening, historiography, and heritage negotiations. Her publications in 2023 include The Art Song of East Asia and Australia, 1900–1950 (Routledge), her second co-edited volume, and Making Chinese Instrumental Relics in Pre-UNESCO Modernity: Datong Music Society’s ‘Heritage’ Project (Journal of Music Research, Taipei). Her article Riding the Wind with Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ Symphony: The Kantian and Daoist Sublimes in Chinese Musical Modernity (Music & Letters, UK, 2015) received the Rulan Chao Pian Publication Prize in 2016. With her recent discovery of a set of Chinese musical instruments donated by Datong Music Society to Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany in 1925, she has initiated a collaborative exhibit and research project between her institution and the museum (2026), and has brought about a collaboration with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (2024).

Obgleich die Zahl der Studierenden des Fachs Koreanistik/Koreastudien in Deutschland seit Jahren kontinuierlich steigt, bleiben langfristige Karrierechancen innerhalb der deutschen Universitäten nach wie vor begrenzt. Mit dem wachsenden Bedarf an Fachwissen über Korea bieten sich jedoch auch zunehmend vielfältigere Möglichkeiten für alternative, außeruniversitäre Karrierewege. Vor diesem Hintergrund zielte der Workshop darauf ab, Studierende der Koreastudien/Koreanistik an mögliche alternative Karrierewege heranzuführen. Dazu haben ausgewählte Experten und Praktiker aus verschiedenen Institutionen ihre eigenen Karrierewege sowie ihre koreabezogene Arbeit in Think Tanks, politischen Stiftungen sowie der Botschaft der Republik Korea in Deutschland vorgestellt und Chancen sowie Herausforderungen mit den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern diskutiert.

Felix Berenskötter, PhD is Reader in International Relations in the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London.

Abstract:
This talk explores the concept of trust in international friendship. Trust is generally accepted as intrinsic to and, perhaps, the key feature of friendship. Yet precisely because of its centrality, and because international friendship is not a straightforward phenomenon, we need to think carefully about how we situate and ‘see’ trust in such a configuration. The talk approaches this task in three steps: (i) reviewing different ways trust can be conceptualised in general, highlighting its future-orientation, (ii) offering a reading that is intertwined with an ontology of international friendship as shared being in time, and (iii) linking the concept to observable expressions in international politics, namely practices of solidarity, the sharing of private information/secrets, and critique.

About the author
Yasmin Koppen is postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Religions at Leipzig University, focusing on Chinese and Southeast Asian religions. She completed her studies in Chinese and Religious Studies at Ruhr University Bochum and enhanced her expertise in Vietnamese studies as a research fellow at LWL-Museum für Archäologie in Herne. Her doctoral studies were supported by AREA Ruhr. Her current research concerns the religionization of environmental movements in the struggle of indigenous cultures against green imperialism in Southeast Asia.

About the Book
The book examines the contrasting outcomes of the Chinese Empire’s conquests of Sichuan and Vietnam with a focus on the dynamics between central authority and local autonomy, as they are evident in the transformation of sacred sites. The Experiential Architecture Analysis (EAA) introduced in this book offers a framework to examine spatial-social interactions, which provided new insights into transcultural ideology transfer and the roles of sacred sites in visualizing power and resistance. The case studies demonstrate the role of hydrolatric sites in the social resilience of local cultures under transregional pressure.

Masaki Kondo war an der Universität Kobe tätig, nachdem er seine Doktorarbeit an der Universität Kyoto abgeschlossen hatte. Seit 2018 ist er Professor für Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Kyoto in Japan. Masaki Kondos Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen die Sozial- und Parteienpolitik in Deutschland sowie vergleichende Studien zwischen Deutschland und Japan. Er hat Monographien wie Die Geschichte der CDU und Die politische Ökonomie des deutschen Wohlfahrtsstaates veröffentlicht. Darüber hinaus war er Herausgeber mehrerer Sammelbände, darunter Vergleichende Wohlfahrtsstaatsforschung und Konservative Parteien im Wandel. Zudem hat er Aufsätze mit vergleichenden Studien zwischen Japan und Deutschland auf Deutsch publiziert.

„Kooperation statt China-Bashing“ empfehlen die IN-EAST-Chinaexperten Giulia Romano und Markus Taube.

Im Interview geht es um die Entwicklung der Städtepartnerschaft Duisburg-Wuhan von 1982 bis heute und die wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Zusammenarbeit, die nicht so intensiv war wie sie hätte sein können. Zudem wird im Bereich der kritischen Infrastrukturen durch die politische Bewertung Chinas als System-Rivale eine enge Zusammenarbeit verhindert. Im Bereich Logistik und Handel hat sich Duisburg jedoch, vor allem durch seinen wettbewerbsstarken Hafen, als wichtiger Standort etabliert und wurde ein wichtiger Endpunkt der „Neuen Seidenstraße“. Kultureller Austausch, auch über das Konfuzius-Institut, blieb begrenzt, aber die Universitäten in Duisburg und Wuhan arbeiten eng zusammen.
Ein differenzierter Blick auf China trägt zum gegenseitigen Verstehen bei (was Kritik nicht ausschließt), dadurch werden Interessenausgleich und partnerschaftliche Zusammenarbeit gefördert.

• Sie wirken mit an den wissenschaftlichen Dienstleistungen in Forschung und Lehre am IfP/IN-EAST
• Sie beteiligen sich an den Forschungsarbeiten der Professur im Bereich der politikwissenschaftlichen und soziologischen Koreaforschung, vor allem durch ein einschlägiges Promotionsvorhaben mit empirischem Bezug zu Korea
• Sie führen eigenständig Lehrveranstaltungen in den von der Professur mitbetreuten Studiengängen durch. Das Lehrdeputat beläuft sich auf 2 Semesterwochenstunden. Dies schließt die grundsätzliche Bereitschaft und Befähigung mit ein, Lehre auch in englischer Sprache durchzuführen.

• Sie haben fundierte Kenntnisse der qualitativen und/oder quantitativen Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung
• Sie drücken sich in deutscher und englischer Sprache sicher in Wort und Schrift aus
• Sie arbeiten systematisch, präzise und eigenständig, haben Organisationstalent und sind teamorientiert
• Sie haben einen souveränen Umgang mit digitalen Werkzeugen und fortgeschrittene Sprachkenntnisse des Koreanischen

Bonnie Tilland is a university lecturer in the Institute for Area Studies at Leiden University.

Abstract:
Despite its decades since “local autonomy” measures following democratization, South Korea is widely known as a state with a high degree of centralization. The mega-city of Seoul, with a population of over 10 million (and 23 million for the greater metropolitan area), overshadows all other cities in South Korea by a wide margin. This paper analyzes regional sentiment and decentralization discourse through both visual analysis of media (film, television) representing non-Seoul regions, and ethnographic data in order to highlight contributions of marginalized regions to South Korean social and cultural movements and to broader social life. In particular, I draw on interviews and participant-observation with South Korean mothers in provincial cities over a ten-year period, who explained that living in “not-Seoul” meant that their children had less access to educational resources than children in the capital area; on the other hand, some parents spoke of local community and regional culture as benefits for children. I argue that representations of “not-Seoul” on screen and non-Seoul residents’ readings of them complicate understandings of national and regional space in South Korea since decentralization measures started in the 1990s. These mediated, affective dimensions of citizenship have implications for regional South Korean families’ experiences, and by extension, demographic futures.

Jin-Wook Shin is Professor at the Department of Sociology at Chung-Ang University, Seoul. He studied sociology at Yonsei University and received his Ph.D. in sociology at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. He teaches Political Sociology, Social Movements, and Social Problems, and researches and publishes in areas such as democratic theory, party politics, social movements, social inequalities, and welfare state.

About the Book
Democracy and Human Rights in the Kim Dae-jung Era is a collection of six chapters that analytically examine former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung’s philosophy, ideas, policies, achievements, and commitment to democracy, human rights, and peace, and use them to assess the current state of democracy and human rights in today’s South Korea. Edited by Jin-Wook Shin, the volume is part of a series of books published by the Academy of Kim Dae-jung Studies and includes authors from the disciplines of history, sociology, political science, and law.

Making human activity on Earth sustainable is currently the greatest challenge of mankind. Ever since the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the topic has gained world-wide popularity, but what sustainability means, how it can be achieved, how it is politically negotiated, and which actors are involved differs widely across the world. The purpose of this conference is to gain a better understanding of how issues of sustainability are understood, framed and pursued by different actors in Japan. Focusing on economic, societal, and political perspectives, we hope not only to encourage more social science research and teaching related to sustainability issues in Japan, but also to interrogate more widely what sustainability means for the academic profession.

Their findings reveal that shipments from large central places to their surrounding hinterlands are 50 % to 125 % larger than predicted by the workhorse model of the empirical trade literature. Breaking down the centrality bias in inter-city trade along the margins of their data, the authors find that aggregate shipments from central places to their associated hinterlands are disproportionately larger not because there are more shipments per industry or because transactions are on average more valuable, but because central places cater to their hinterland across a considerably wider range of industries.

Comparative Perspectives on the Transformation of East Asian Labor Markets through International Skilled Migration, on Saturday 2nd November, at the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo.

This on-site workshop brings together scholars working on skilled migration, not only in Japan but also in South Korea and Taiwan, as all three countries similarly undergo an accelerated demographic decline and a labor shortage. These countries are in dire need to attract and secure long-time skilled professionals in order to maintain economic growth, to remain competent in global markets, and counter challenges arising from population decline and the fourth industrial revolution. The objective of the workshop is therefore to understand how different actors in the three countries – government, firms, and migrant individuals/employees – shape the transformation of the domestic labor market, adjust to or proactively seek out opportunities in the increasingly internationalizing/globalizing labor market, and navigate the problems associated with this transformation. Talk on the Upcoming Election, Public Opinion and the Prime Minister in Japan  |  Tue, October 22, 2024, 6 pm  |  LE 736
Prof. Yukio Maeda, political scientist at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, will visit the IN-EAST and deliver a talk on how approval ratings in public opinion polls have become a crucial power resource for prime ministers in contemporary Japanese politics.
Prof. Maeda will also provide a brief overview over the changes in the role of prime ministers and illustrate how advancements in polling methodology and the increased frequency of polls have further intensified prime ministers' dependence on their approval ratings.
With the next general election just around the corner, the talk will also deal with the most recent results of public opinion polls, including attitudes toward the undocumented political funds of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The China Competence Network Ruhr Niederrhein (C-NET RNR) https://www.cnetrnr.de ) invites you to join this online workshop to learn more about the various institutions in Germany that provide support and funding opportunities for your research in and on the People’s Republic of China.

What to expect: In our 1.5-hour workshop Dr. Christina Philips (DAAD Centre for International Academic Cooperation – KIWi) will provide an overview of the DAAD portfolio for PhD students and Postdocs interested in academic cooperation with China. She will also introduce KIWi and its services for German Institutions of Higher Education. The DAAD is Germany’s largest provider of scholarships. In addition, many other public and private bodies give financial support to junior researchers focusing on China. Important donors include the European Union, a large number of public foundations, and Germany’s federal government ministries. Arvid Kempf (Hans-Böckler-Stiftung) will acquaint us with CHIN-KoBe, a project for the advancement of Chinese competency among the scholarship holders of the 13 organizations for the promotion of young talent under the umbrella of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The goal of CHIN-KoBe is to prepare students and junior researchers for a study or research stay in a Chinese speaking environment by strengthening their knowledge, language skills and experience abroad.

This workshop is aimed at all early career researchers (from pre- to post-doctoral levels) who are interested in academic cooperation with China.

Nachhaltigkeit, Umwelt- und Klimaschutz in China. Informationen und Austausch im Herbst am Konfuzius-Institut. Start: 10.10.2024
Das Thema Klimawandel bewegt auch die chinesische Öffentlichkeit. Umweltschutz und Klimapolitik haben einen hohen Stellenwert und sind grundlegend relevant für wirtschafts- und gesellschaftspolitische Entscheidungen. Bis zum Jahr 2030 will das Land den Höchststand der CO₂-Emmissionen erreicht haben und ab 2060 soll China klimaneutral sein. Aber wie geht die Regierung diese Mammutaufgabe an? Welche Initiativen entwickelt die Privatwirtschaft? Wie will das Land Emissionen reduzieren und regulieren? Was sind die Herausforderungen für die Energiesicherheit? Welche Akteure sind wie in den politischen Prozess rund um die angestrebte grüne Transformation involviert? Mit vier vielbeachteten Referentinnen und Referenten aus Deutschland und China beleuchtet und diskutiert das Konfuzius-Institut im Oktober und November im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe China im Fokus die Themen Nachhaltigkeit, Umwelt- und Klimaschutz in China.

Wie gewohnt ist nach den Vorträgen Zeit für Fragen aus dem Publikum eingeplant. Im Anschluss lädt das Konfuzius-Institut zum Verweilen und Austausch ein, für eine Erfrischung ist gesorgt (ausgenommen Online-Vortrag).
