Inequality from a socio-economic perspective: MOOC launched.

Income and wealth are unequally distributed worldwide. The forms, causes and consequences of economic inequality are not only the focus of current political debates, but are also one of the main topics in research and teaching at ifso. As of now, a new free online course offers anyone and everyone the opportunity to gain initial insights into the topic.

Learn more (Click to view)

In four chapters, comprising a total of 34 lessons, 25 specially produced videos and numerous interactive applications, the course addresses the aspects of

  • Dimensions of Inequality,
  • Inequality in Macroeconomic Analysis,
  • Social Philosophy and Distribution, and
  • Taxes and Distribution.

The course offers a good opportunity to get to know a scientific approach characterized by disciplinary and paradigmatic diversity of perspectives. At the same time, the course provides a first insight into studying socioeconomics at UDE and opens up the opportunity to get to know four of the ifso professors*: Miriam Rehm, Till van Treeck, Jakob Kapeller and Achim Truger each lead through a chapter. To make the effort worthwhile, a successful completion of the course can be certified and even credited with 2 ECTS within the MA Socioeconomics.

In addition to those interested in the course, it is also relevant for teachers at schools and universities. This is because the content is largely published under open licenses, which enables extensive use, editing and (edited) distribution. Thus, individual course contents can be extracted, adapted to one's own teaching needs and passed on. The content thus follows the example of other open learning resources that have been created at and around ifso.

Daniel Obst and Julian Becker were responsible for the conception, implementation and editing of the course. They were supported by Rebecca Wangemann, and video production and animation were handled by Jonas Schulte. The development of the course was made possible by a funding program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Stifterverband.
