Enhance your competencies and plan the next steps

During your doctorate, you will acquire a great depth of knowledge and gain particular expertise in your field of research. In addition, transferable skills such as communication skills, capability for teamwork, or self-management are essential components in your career journey. Our interdisciplinary training and networking programme offers many opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Regular workshops and academies allow you to strengthen competencies that are helpful for your future career in academia, non-university research, the private sector, or science management. Furthermore, our mentoring programmes and career events under the umbrella of Research Academy Ruhr create a space where you can benefit from exchanging experiences with peers and experts and get first-hand information about career options after the PhD.

Participation in our workshops and coaching sessions is usually free of charge and you will be given a certificate of attendance upon finishing the course. Answers to other frequently asked questions can be found in the FAQ below.

FAQ about our offers

Who can participate in our offers?

Our programmes are aimed at (prospective) doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and the Junior Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen. Our training programmes are usually tailored to a specific career phase. Please note the target group information in our announcements.

If you are not enrolled as a doctoral student at the UDE but are doing your doctorate in a graduate programme coordinated at the UDE, you can also register for our workshops.

Selected offers (Training Days, Publication Days, Summer School, Frühjahrsakademie) are open to doctoral researchers of the Rhine-Waal and Ruhr West Universities of Applied Sciences. You will find a corresponding note on the programme pages and can register for the events mentioned.

Our events offered under the umbrella of Research Academy Ruhr are also open to members of Ruhr-Universität Bochum and TU Dortmund University. Early career researchers from cooperating research institutions can participate in our offers upon request.

For which subject areas are GC Plus’ offers designed?

In general, our events and training offers are designed for early career researchers from all disciplines. Any exceptions are mentioned in the announcements.

Will I automatically be released from work to participate?

Participation in GC Plus offers is always voluntary. You are responsible for making arrangements with or obtaining time off from your supervisor.

Are there any costs for participation?

Participation is usually free of charge. However, we will indicate if a contribution to cover expenses is required in the event announcement.

Is my registration binding?

Your registration for our offers is binding. You will receive an automatic confirmation of your registration by e-mail. If you register for a workshop with limited capacity, we will inform you only after the registration deadline if you can participate. You will find detailed information on the respective registration procedure on the event pages.

We cooperate with aproved, mostly external experts and trainers for our workshops and events. Therefore, please take your registration and participation seriously and refrain from registering if you are unsure whether you can really participate.

Should you become ill or something unforeseen happens, we are grateful for an immediate cancellation by e-mail. This will enable us to accept candidates from the waiting list.

Will I receive a certificate of attendance? Does GC Plus awards credit points for participation?

We certify your participation with a certificate, usually handed out to you directly after the event on-site or sent to you by e-mail a few days later. We can not award credit points for our courses. Please clarify the crediting individually within your institution or graduate school if necessary.

Is childcare provided?

Should you require childcare during your participation in our events, please note this in the comments field of the registration form, and we will try to find a solution.

How can I give feedback on GC Plus’ events?
