Career Counselling for Female Early Career Researchers
Identifying Career Perspectives in Academia and Beyond
With our career counselling for (prospective) female researchers and Master's students interested in pursuing a doctorate, we would like to support and accompany you on your individual path. Our counselling services are available to you regardless of whether you are pursuing a career as a researchers, research manager or in industry, or are currently in a phase of orientation and would like to discuss your options.
In an individual counselling session, we will clarify your concerns and work with you to explore the opportunities available to you and how you can develop your strengths in a targeted and systematic manner. In doing so, we will take into account your current circumstances as well as your wishes for the future.
Possible Topics and Content of the Counselling Sessions
We are happy to advise you on topics such as:
- Career counselling for female early career researchers
- Tenure track mentoring for junior professors
- Strategic networking
- Decision-making on the path to a doctorate and in career development
- Identification of strengths and potentials for your own path

mentoring³: The Mentoring Programme for Female Doctoral and Postdoctoral Researchers at the UA Ruhr
Connecting Women – Shaping Science
Are you interested in discussing your professional development with experienced researchers? Would you like to gain informal knowledge about structures and rules in the research community and broaden your perspective? Then mentoring³ is the right choice for you!
Under the umbrella of the UA Ruhr Research Academy, mentoring³ offers exchange and networking opportunities for female researchers in the doctoral or postdoctoral phase. Over a period of two years, the programme combines 1:1 mentoring with an experienced researcher with training for a research career and networking meetings.
As a participant, you will gain exclusive insights into the implicit ‘rules of the game’ in the academic system and receive individual support in preparing for your next career decisions and steps. New programme lines (by subject group) for doctoral researchers and postdocs start annually in October. The application period is from June to July.

Diversity Support Center
The Diversity Support Center (DSC), with its departments for equality, diversity and reconciliation, forms the operational unit for diversity and equal opportunities at the UDE. The overarching goal of the DSC is to establish an inclusive university culture in which the diversity of the university's members is recognised and valued. The focus is on breaking down structural barriers and promoting equal opportunities for all – regardless of gender, ethnic and social background, disability, sexual orientation, age or religion.
The UDE's Family Service is therefore also based at the DSC. As a service and counselling center, the Family Service primarily supports employees of the University of Duisburg-Essen with offers to help them balance family life with their academic career/professional activities. The family environment includes all (life) communities in which long-term mutual social responsibility for others is assumed, even across households. The services offered by the Family Service therefore relate to counselling and support on issues concerning the compatibility of childcare and work, as well as the compatibility of care responsibilities and work.
Central and Decentral Equal Opportunity Officers at the UDE
Gender equality is a core task in achieving equal opportunities. The UDE's dual strategy is based on structural measures and individual support at all qualification levels. The aim is to increase visibility and representation in management positions and decision-making processes. In addition to counselling and open consultation hours in the libraries, the UDE's central equality office also offers a wide range of workshops and other measures.
