Originally, Felix Gerach simply wanted to become a doctor. Today, alongside his medical degree, he often spends long evenings in the laboratory researching one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer: glioblastoma. In this interview, he explains why he is so passionate about combining clinical medicine and research, why lively debates over data are what he calls “real hardcore science”, and how research ultimately captured his imagination.

Felix, alongside your medical studies you often spend long evenings in the lab. What is it that fascinates you so much about research?
Above all, it's the feeling of being part of something that really matters.
At the same time, I simply love scientific research. We're constantly tackling new questions and working together to find answers.
Did you always want to go into research?
Not at all. At first, I simply wanted to study medicine and become a doctor. In the beginning, I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about laboratory work during my degree.
So what changed?
It happened almost by chance. After my pre-clinical medical examinations, a lecturer working in cardiovascular research approached me and offered me the opportunity to start a doctoral project in his lab. So I went to have a look.
Suddenly, I found that I genuinely enjoyed laboratory work. I realised just how important and exciting research really is. But I also discovered something else: my heart belongs to the brain. So I introduced myself to the Neuro-Oncology Department and started working there as a student research assistant—and that's when everything really clicked.

What fascinates you most about neuro-oncology?
The combination of clinical medicine and research. We work on glioblastoma, the most aggressive brain tumour in adults. Unfortunately, the prognosis for patients remains poor, and there has still not been a real breakthrough in treatment. That's why finding new therapeutic approaches is so important.
Seeing the reality of the disease in the clinic and then bringing those questions into the laboratory, with the hope of one day opening up new treatment options—that's incredibly motivating.

What does your day-to-day life look like, balancing medical school and research?
It's pretty intense. A typical day often means university lectures in the morning, with lab work before and afterwards, sometimes until 10 p.m. The days are long, but they fly by.
Some days I spend entirely in the lab running experiments. On others, I'm at my desk analysing data or reading scientific papers. And sometimes everything happens in the same day.
I simply love this world. I get to work with incredibly talented people, often in international teams. That's something quite special.

Which moments make research especially exciting for you?
The really intensive meetings.
Professors who have spent decades doing research sit around the table together with MD/PhD students like me, and everyone's opinion matters. When discussions about the data become really lively and everyone is working together to solve a problem, I often think: this is real hardcore science. And that's exactly what makes it so enjoyable.
After meetings like that, the air in the room feels completely used up, but your head is buzzing with new ideas. Moments like those are incredibly inspiring.
What do you enjoy most about everyday life in the lab?
When several of us are standing together at the bench, music is playing in the background, and we're working and laughing together, those often become some of the best moments.
It's this combination of scientific curiosity and genuine team spirit that makes research so special for me.
Research is often associated with major breakthroughs. Are there difficult periods too?
Absolutely. In science, you need a high tolerance for frustration. Many things don't work the first time, either because you make mistakes or because experiments simply fail. Sometimes there are even some fairly colourful words in the lab when everything seems to be going wrong. But that's all part of the process.

What keeps you motivated to carry on?
The moments when something finally works make all the difficult phases worthwhile. So does the team, and of course the enthusiasm we all share for our research.
Learning what scientific life is really like as a newcomer is incredibly exciting.
What makes doing a MD/PhD so special for you?
There are always those eureka moments when you suddenly understand your data in a completely different way, or someone offers a new perspective. That's what I find most exciting.
And sometimes those moments lead to ideas that initially seem almost unlikely. That's exactly what makes research so fascinating to me.
Felix Gerach is studying Medicine while pursuing his MD/PhD in Translational Neuro-Oncology.
His research focuses on novel immuno-oncology approaches for brain tumours, particularly glioblastoma. At the University Hospital, he is investigating a new method of isolating tumour-reactive immune cells from the skull bone—including from so-called bone dust, a by-product of neurosurgical procedures that has previously been discarded. The aim of his research is to better understand these cells and, in the long term, harness them for new immunotherapeutic strategies.
