Ambiguity of perception: Ambiguous everyday life in sieranevada by Cristi Puiu (ROM 2015)

Film tends to be shot indiscriminately; literally everything that comes in front of the lens is equally valid for the technical apparatus. In this respect, the medium of film per se has a tendency towards ambiguity. Any order, be it of the plot, the narrative, the composition, the coherence and logic, is always opposed in film by a disorder that relativizes it. The specifically political aspect of film lies in this questioning of orders that tend towards unambiguity. Based on these reflections on the relationship between film and ambiguity, the Jena film scholar Bernhard Groß analyzes how the contemporary Romanian film sieranevada designs two different orders of perception and unfolds the resulting ambiguity into a expanded space of possibility of the viewer's experience.

The film will be shown in a shortened version (approx. 2 hrs.) in Romanian original language with English subtitles. Prof. Groß's lecture will be given in German.
