Qualification program

UnOCat offers an individually agreed study programme to the PhD students building up on compulsory modules and complementary individual measures.

The SPECIFIC COMPULSORY PROGRAM consists of:

The INDIVIDUAL STUDY PROGRAM will be developed with agreement of the supervisors and contains additional advanced lectures of the participating departments of the UDE and RUB as well as lectures from IMPRS SurMat and RECHARGE. In addition to the lectures, specific training at complex instrumentation will be offered on demand to allow instrument access and to foster collaboration within CRC/TRR 247.

The COMPLEMENTARY QUALIFICATION PROGRAM contains specific courses for key qualification skills, e.g., presentation skills, rhetoric, scientific writing, but also courses related to patent law or business start-up. Here, doctoral researchers can choose from already existing regular offers at the participating universities and Max Planck institutes.
With supervisors agreed, doctoral researchers who participate in other doctoral training programs (such as International Max Planck Research Schools, RUB Research School, Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry) can combine their activities for the requirements of the CRC/TRR 247 Integrated Research Training Group.

Training through voluntary short-term (two-month) research visits at collaborating university or research institute abroad is highly recommended. These exchange visits will give the opportunity to specialize and further qualify in a field of interest.
UnOCat covers the travel expenses for the short-term research visit, but accommodation and further expenses on site have to be paid by the supervisors. The expenditure are subject to prior approval by the direct supervisor and the program coordinator. Therefore, please submit your travel request via Email to the TRR Coordination Office.

Associated members are obliged to participate in the Colloquium, the PhD retreats, the SummerSchool, and the annual meetings - lecture series only if possible. They also have to give an open house presentation for the public and take a course related to "Good scientific practice".
Full members are obliged to participate in all mentioned UnOCat events.
