The Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) can award grants to its members for research projects related to the ZWU's areas of focus, using funds from the Innovation Fund or, alternatively, from project overheads. The purpose of this measure is

a) promoting initiatives to attract interdisciplinary collaborative projects,
b) initiating interdisciplinary collaborations that lead to a (single) application,
or
c) financing preparatory work for submitted interdisciplinary collaborative projects (interim financing).

Results:
The preliminary tests will enable the XTT cytotoxicity test to be combined with the CALUX reporter gene assays in future.  This will significantly reduce the time, personnel and material required for investigations using the CALUX reporter gene assays. There are plans to publish the results of the preliminary tests in a peer-reviewed scientific publication.
