Erasmus+ blended intensive programmes (BIPs)

On this page, you will find information for teaching staff at UDE who would like to

Information for students who are interested in taking part in a BIP is available here.

BIPs at a glance

Requirements

  • combination of a physical mobility (at least five days) and a virtual component (no minimum duration)
  • cooperation among at least three universities in three Erasmus+ programme countries
  • a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 20 participants receiving Erasmus+ funding
  • a minimum of 3 ECTS credits
  • an Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement

Roles

UDE can play any of three roles in a BIP:

Coordinating university
  • UDE assumes responsibility for the overall coordination of the BIP, applies for the organisational support (OS) funds, performs administrative tasks and is also either the sending or the receiving institution.
Receiving institution
  • UDE conducts the BIP on campus (or in Germany) and, as a rule, organises the classes and accommodation for the students.
Sending institution
  • UDE takes part in a BIP as a partner and sends students or staff to the partner university as part of am Erasmus+ short-term mobility.
  •

Organising a BIP (the coordinating university is usually also the receiving institution)

The coordinating university assumes the main responsibility for organising, administering and conducting the BIP. The coordinating university is usually also the host. In terms of administration, the simplest way to handle things is for the coordinating university also to serve as the receiving institution in a BIP and the mobility phase to be held there. That way, there is no need to transfer funds approved for the organisation of the BIP.

Application

The funding that can be used to support BIPs at UDE is limited, so it is vital to coordinate at an early stage.

Before you enter into any concrete agreements with (potential) partner universities, and at least six months before the planned start of the BIP,  please contact the International Office (shortmobility@uni-due.de) to:

  • discuss the framework conditions
  • check eligibility for funding
  • agree on further planning steps

BIPs within the Aurora University Alliance will be given priority in awarding funds.

Organisation

The coordinating university assumes the main responsibility for the planning, organisation and implementation. As a rule, it also serves as the host institution.

The following conditions must be met for a BIP to be conducted at UDE:

  • class concept jointly developed with at least two partner universities
  • minimum of 3 ECTS credits for students and a comparable workload for staff
  • at least 10 mobile Erasmus+ funded participants; UDE participants and teaching staff at the partner universities do not count toward this minimum number

The International Office supports you in the administrative implementation and is responsible for:

  • concluding the Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreements with the partner universities
  • making available and disbursing the funds for the organisation of the BIP

Funding for the mobile students is handled by their respective home university.

Funding

The coordinating university receives Erasmus+ organisational support (OS) funds to conduct a blended intensive programme (BIP). The OS funds amount to €400 per mobile Erasmus+ funded individual and can be awarded for a maximum of 20 participants (up to €8,000 in total).

The requirement for this funding is a minimum of 10 mobile Erasmus+ funded individuals. BIPs with fewer than 10 participants are not eligible for this funding.

OS funds can be used for the following purposes, for example:

  • teaching contracts
  • teaching and work materials
  • leasing space
  • translations and communication measures
  • equipment
  • excursions (including entrance fees)
  • producing teaching materials including printing costs
  • catering

Participating in a BIP (sending institution)

When UDE takes part in a BIP run by a partner university, it assumes the role of sending institution. In this case, the BIP is coordinated and implemented by a partner institution.

Application

When UDE assumes this role, a separate application for the organisation of a BIP is not necessary. Instead, UDE’s part in the preparation is to discuss terms with the coordinating university and manage the student mobilities.

The funding available to support participation in BIPs is limited. Before you make any concrete agreements with partner universities, please contact the International Office (shortmobility@uni-due.de) at an early stage to:

  • discuss participation in the BIP
  • check eligibility for funding
  • manage the student mobility process

Organisation

As the sending institution, UDE assumes the following tasks in particular:

  • agreeing with the coordinating university on the BIP (content, number of spots available, schedule)
  • selection and nomination of suitable students
  • information for and consultation with participants
  • participation in the virtual and/or physical teaching phase if applicable
  • ensuring recognition of the credits earned

Requirements for participation are:

  • The BIP must fulfil the Erasmus+ criteria (e.g. at least 3 ECTS credits).
  • The students must be enrolled at UDE.

Funding

Student participation is funded as part of an Erasmus+ short-term mobility. Staff participation is funded as part of Erasmus+ staff mobility.

UDE is responsible for:

  • administration of the Erasmus+ grants
  • disbursing individual grants to students

Funding usually consists of:

  • a mobility grant (depending on the duration and destination country)
  • a travel cost allowance (depending on the destination country)
  • additional funding where applicable (e.g. for students with limited opportunities)

Further information about financial support for students is available here, and information for UDE staff is available here. If you teach part of a BIP you can receive funding through an Erasmus+ teaching staff mobility.

Funding for the organisation of a BIP (OS funds) is awarded only to the coordinating university.
