Language Courses at UDE

Usually the main language of teaching and communicating in the faculties is German. However, numerous visiting researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen get by very well without any knowledge of German.

If you are interested in taking language classes to learn German or to improve your language skills, you will find various courses at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Before you start a course, you must complete a placement test to find out, which course is suitable for your level of language skills. You can find more information on the pages of the Institut für Optionale Studien (IOS). A list of all the language courses offered this semester is available in the university prospectus (LSF).

For PhD students, registration is possible via the university prospectus. Guest researchers fill in this form and send it to

Tandem Language Learning ("Sprachtandem")

In addition, the International Office can put you in contact with a "language tandem partner". This tandem system gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills by interacting with native speakers without the constraints of course timetables, whilst at the same time learning interesting facts about daily and professional life as well as recreational opportunities in Germany.

Here, you can find out more about the offer and how to register for it.

German courses offered by other providers

Public institutions and private schools and institutes offer language courses as well. We cannot recommend you any specific language school, but we can give you a brief overview of language course providers in Duisburg and Essen:

EURAXESS Germany also offers information on learning the German language. Moveover, there is a Goethe-Institut in Düsseldorf offering German courses.
