Past OER network meetings

9th OER network meeting on 10.11.2025: Accessibility

At the 9th OER network meeting, we will focus entirely on the topic of Accessibility.

What are some ways to make your own material accessible to as many people as possible, whether via Moodle, H5P, or other platforms and tools? And how can AI help break down barriers? In addition to the opportunity for exchange and networking, we welcome Dr. Anne Haage from the Kompetenzzentrum für digitale Barrierefreiheit, barrierefreiheit.nrw, for a practical input.

Speakers:

Dr. Anne Haage: Accessible OER

Competence center for digital accessibility ('Kompetenzzentrum für digitale Barrierefreiheit'), barrierefreiheit.nrw / DoBuS TU Dortmund

In her input on accessibility, Dr. Anne Haage first presents the four principles of accessibility before discussing the accessible design of documents, images, and videos. Finally, she uses a selection of H5P tools as examples to illustrate the obstacles they present and how they can be overcome.

Laura Schaffeld: Accessibility in Moodle

Moodle.NRW Competence Center/ Center for Information and Media Services ('Zentrum für Informations- und Mediendienste')

In her presentation, Laura Schaffeld introduces basic options for structuring Moodle courses, including using the TinyMCE editor. She also discusses the accessible design of text and media fields in Moodle and shares further tips on functions and support services at UDE.

Leonie Dieng and Lydia Württemberger: Plagiarism prevention by PlagStop.nrw

Consulting Library, University Library

Leonie Dieng and Lydia Württemberger present a new Moodle course on plagiarism prevention. The course is based on materials from the PlagStop.nrw project and is freely accessible as an OER in Moodle. In their presentation, they report on their experiences in course development using materials from the project, including against the backdrop of barrier-free design.

8th OER network meeting on 12.06.2025: OER and AI

At the 8th OER network meeting, we will focus entirely on the topic of OER and AI. The exchange will focus on the current legal situation surrounding AI and the question of which AI tools can be used sensibly. Framed by input contributions, we will discuss together what needs to be considered when creating OER with the support of AI in order to ensure targeted and (legally) safe use.

Speakers:

Yulia Loose: Creating OER with AI: What is allowed under copyright law and what is not?

Legal advisor at twillo / ELAN e.V.

Creating OER with AI: What is permitted under copyright law and what is not?

AI tools have the potential to facilitate the creation of open educational materials and improve results. However, there is often uncertainty about the constantly changing legal situation. In her input session, Yulia Loose shows what is and is not permitted under copyright law. She takes a practical approach to the following questions: Are AI products protected by copyright? Can AI output be openly licensed? Can AI be trained with third-party works? Who is liable for infringements? How can the liability risk be minimized? What is allowed and what is not allowed from a copyright perspective?

Ed Watson and Anna-Maria Tipotsch: Optimising the OER Production Workflow through AI-Supported Tools

University of Innsbruck, Central Information Service

Optimization of the OER production workflow through AI-supported tools

In the fnma project “Optimization of the OER production workflow through AI-supported tools”, the universities of Innsbruck and Graz collaboratively investigated the questions of how AI tools can support the production of teaching and learning materials while maintaining consistent quality and what skills are required to use the tools. The team that was formed for this purpose is composed of five working groups that examine different media (text, image, sound, video, and animation). In their input contribution, Ed Watson and Anna-Maria Tipotsch will provide insights into the project results, present tools and share practical tips for the effective use of AI for open educational materials. (The presentation will be held in English.)

7th OER network meeting on 06.02.2025: Reusability and target group orientation

At the 7th OER network meeting, the focus will be on the reusability and the strongly associated target group orientation of an OER. How can OER be optimally tailored to target groups and easily reused? What needs to be considered during the creation process? We would like to tackle these and other questions together with you.

Speakers:

Dr.-Ing. Alexander Schwarz: DTM - Digital Engineering Mechanics

Engineering Sciences, UDE

DTM – Digital Engineering Mechanics

Creation and establishment of digital learning materials as a sustainable contribution to the improvement of basic education in the field of mechanics.

A modular structure of the materials is intended to ensure subsequent use at different locations, adaptation to individual learning objectives and to different taxonomy levels.

German Linguistics, UDE

RUEGram.de Empowering Family Languages

Further development and adaptation of multimedia educational resources from the RUEG Emerging Grammars in Language Contact Situations research group for the integration of multilingualism in teacher training.

A translation or subtitling of the materials into different languages of origin should enable their use for the widest possible group, and a subdivision of the materials into target groups (parents, nursery and school staff) should simplify their subsequent use.

Björn Bulizek: ePortfolios with Moodle und H5P

Center for Teacher Education, UDE

Development of a new H5P content type from the eport.nrw project as a digital tool for self-reflection and self-awareness for comprehensive use in all practical phases of teacher training.

The new ePortfolio is compatible with both the Moodle and ILIAS learning platforms and can therefore be used at different locations. The ePortfolio was also examined by the Kompetenzzentrum für digitale Barrierefreiheit.nrw and comments on this were implemented. The content type is expected to be available at the UDE from the summer semester 2025.

6th OER network meeting on 04.07.2024: Quality assurance and OER

The 6th OER network meeting is dedicated to the topic of quality assurance of OER. We would like to discuss questions and problems with you in order to find ways in which we can tackle current hurdles in the area of quality assurance together with you.

Speakers:

Stephanie Herbstreit and Kathrin Wesolowski: DiKoMed –  Teaching digital skills in medical studies

Institute for Medical Didactics

Digital technologies have permanently changed medicine in terms of existing work and organizational processes. The DiKoMed project aims to provide medical students with the necessary basic knowledge and digital skills to prepare them for a digital society and working world with a view to their future medical work. As an OER, DiKoMed can be integrated into classroom teaching in a structured way or used as a time- and location-independent self-study course.

Tobias Schroedler and Minh Salzmann-Hoang: OpenÜsK („OER zur Übung sprachdiagnostischer Kompetenzen“)

German as a second and foreign language

Language diagnostic skills are an important component of effective teaching. For OpenÜsK (“OER zur Übung sprachdiagnostischer Kompetenzen”, “OER for practicing language diagnostic skills”), materials on language assessment procedures from teaching were further developed to offer students and practitioners (teachers, support staff, etc.) interactive practice courses. In our presentation, we highlight challenges related to the transfer or opening up to OER that were relevant with regard to the appropriate contextualization of introductory content and the quality of automated feedback.

Jessica Stegemann and Ceren Yildiz: Project FDM@Studium.nrw – OER  on the topic of research data management

Research Data Services

Since October 2022, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Technical University of Cologne and the University of Wuppertal have been working together with the State Initiative for Research Data Management – fdm.nrw in the project FDM@Studium.nrw. The aim is to develop two learning courses, a combined teaching-learning course and four learning modules on the topic of research data management (RDM) for use in studies and teaching (Bachelors and Masters). All materials are to be published as Open Educational Resources (OER).

5th OER network meeting on 01.02.2024: Use of OER in teaching

The main topic of the 5th network meeting was the “Use of OER in teaching”. There were three very interesting and interdisciplinary presentations that dealt with the main topic from different perspectives.

Isabell Lowitzki shared her experiences from the teaching practice of the research workshop “Diversity and Participation in Digital Learning”. Jan Grey presented how computational vision can be made tangible and emphasized the challenges of integrating digital education into teaching and learning contexts. Inga Gryl provided insights into the hurdles and conditions for success in the creation, dissemination and use of OER, which she compiled and condensed from conferences, workshops and discussions.

Inga Gryl's presentation is not to be regarded as complete, but was supported by a padlet that is now available to you as a community and can be further filled with your content. Together with Inga Gryl, we would like to invite you all to take a look at the padlet and share your ideas, difficulties and experiences in order to continue the discussion on the use of OER beyond the network meeting. In this way, you can have a direct impact on the further development of OER at the UDE!

4th OER network meeting on 06.10.2023: Focus topic: student participation

The 4th OER network meeting in October 2023 focused on the issue of student participation in open educational resources. It was emphasized that students have few points of contact with OER in their studies and need them to be better contextualized. Nevertheless, students are extremely open to the topic. Despite the multiplier function of the lecturers and students at the meeting, the sample here is of course too small to make general statements. Nevertheless, possible trends in student participation were discussed intensively, including ideas for the increased integration of OER into teaching and the provision of contextualized self-learning opportunities for students.

Speakers:

Emma Garcia Sanz: 2x Spanish OER „Scientific Writing“ and „Grammar Teaching“

Faculty of Humanities
Institute for Romance Languages and Literatures

The two projects “Academic writing in Spanish: writing a research paper” and “Teaching grammar in Spanish classes” focus on teaching students how to use the Spanish language. This is why we worked closely with the students. This perspective is a central part of the lecture.

Miriam Mulders and Micha Gittinger: Didactic concepts for the integration of AR in educational scenarios

Faculty of Educational Sciences
Institute of Sport and Movement Sciences

As part of several parallel masters seminars in educational sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen in the winter semester 2022/2023, students will independently design augmented reality (AR) learning applications in project work against the background of a didactic framework, implement them technically by the Center for Information and Media Services (ZIM) at the University of Duisburg-Essen and then test and evaluate them by the students. The experiences gained in this process are reflected on by the students and related to theoretical framework models of teaching and learning with digital media.

In order to make the students work available beyond the seminar and to make it usable and valuable for future educational scenarios, the developed didactic concepts and technical solutions (AR learning applications) are to be categorized, processed, and made available as OER resources for further use.

Leonard Zang: Studentische Perspektive auf das Projekt „Digitale Kompetenzen für Politikwissenschaftler:innen“

Faculty of Social Sciences
Institute for Political Science

“The Digibox is a platform for digital teaching in political science. It is primarily aimed at lecturers in BA Political Science who want to use a teaching module and a digital badge for the certificate “Digital Competencies for Political Scientists” (DigCompPol). In addition, all review board members with an affinity for the topic are addressed.” (taken from the Moodle course Digibox 2.0, 12.09.2023)

3rd OER network meeting on 02.06.2023: Focus topic licenses

At the 3rd OER network meeting at the UDE, the speakers placed particular emphasis on the focus topic of licenses when presenting their OER projects (see below). Many questions and problems from the community were discussed and some were solved directly with a material. For this reason, the Moodle course now includes a template for requesting permission from authors to use materials despite restrictive licenses. Another central topic was the intensive discussion on student participation, which has now been set as the main focus for the fourth meeting.

Speakers:

Julian Becker: Who gets which piece of the cake? Controversies about the distribution of income and wealth
