Coronavirus FAQs for International Researchers

We have compiled a series of FAQs for you on the current situation (as of 30 March 2021).

Which entry restrictions apply when entering Germany?

Please see here for detailed information.

For entry as a guest researcher, I have to prove the necessity of my research activity. How can I do that?

A certificate stating that your research activity can only be carried out in Germany and cannot be postponed will be issued by your host institute. We will be happy to provide a template for this purpose; please contact us at

However, the university is not in a position to judge whether there is a compelling reason for entry. The assessment is made by the Federal Police upon entry. It is therefore possible that the Federal Police will refuse entry even though the UDE has issued a confirmation and the person entering the country will have to return at his or her own expense.

What regulations currently apply in daily life in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)?

Detailed information can be found here.

I am an international researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen but would like to return home. What can I do?

Germany allows international travel again since 2 July 2020. Please consider possible entry restrictions of your home country, though. Additionally, please consider that the situation may change at any moment and a re-entry to Germany cannot be guaranteed.

Please look for information about current developments, e.g. at

Please contact us if you have questions relating to your individual situation.

I had contact to someone who was tested positive for Coronavirus or have symptoms myself. What should I do?

If you have symptoms such as a high temperature, a cough, or a loss of your sense of smell or taste, please stay in your apartment and avoid contact with others. Besides, please call a general physician or the Corona helpline of the city where you live. If you cannot get hold of them, please call KVNO (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Nordrhein).

One of your contacts tested positive for COVID-19? In these cases, please inform your local health authority (Gesundheitsamt).

Where can I get tested for Coronavirus?

Test facilities for the city of Essen are listed here.

For Duisburg, please see here.

Information for Mülheim can be found here.

I want to get the vaccination against Coronavirus. When will be my turn and where will it take place?

Since 7 June, the priorisation for the Coronavirus vaccine has been lifted in NRW so that everyone is allowed to make an appointment for the vaccination at a vaccination center or at a doctor’s office. Appointments at a vaccination center can be made online via this portal: or by telephone: 0800 116 117 01. If you would like to be vaccinated at a doctor’s office, you can contact a general practitioner or specialist of your choice.

From 14 June, employees of the UDE also get the chance to be vaccinated by the company doctor. An email with detailed information on the procedure has already been sent to all employees.

However, please note that the vaccine is currently still in short supply and it may therefore take some time before you get a vaccination appointment.
