E-Mail Settings for mailbox-Servers

To configure your e-mail program you have to enter your e-mail address and the mail-server addresses (POP3, IMAP, SMTP etc.) before first using it:

  • Incoming mail-server: mailbox.uni-duisburg-essen.de
Port: 143 (connection type: TLS) oder 993 (connection type: SSL)
  • Outgoing mail-server: mailout.uni-duisburg-essen.de
    Port: 587 (connection type: TLS)
  • Username: <User-ID/Unikennung>

Automatic Configuration

The ZIM supports the automatic configuration method provided by Thunderbird 3.1 (tutorial) and Outlook (tutorial).

You only need to enter your university e-mail address. The rest will be configured automatically via a server function.

Note!
This function can only be used in the university’s internal network. Should your device be connected to an external network, you first have to connect your device to the VPN.

Configuration

for Windows E-Mail-Clients

Should you be using products by Symantec, Norton Antivirus or McAfee VirusScan, you should turn off virus checks for sending e-mails. Otherwise sending mails with the TLS-certificate will not work!

for mobile devices

for Linux/Unix Clients

On the login-servers you can find the current configuration files pinerc.imap and muttrc.imap in the directory /usr/local/etc/. You need to copy these in your home directory and customize them to gain access to the mailbox-servers.
