Environmental Toxicology (EnviTox)

Environmental Toxicology (EnviTox) is an integrated interdisciplinary Master's degree program offered by the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2010. The study course offers knowledge on chemical properties of xenobiotics and other anthropogenic substances, their interactions with the biosphere, their detection and monitoring, and also legal aspects related to this field.
EnviTox focuses on Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, therefore students with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or Ecology and similar fields of study are welcome as applicants for EnviTox.

Curriculum

The study course EnviTox consists of a more theoretical first study year and a more practical second study year.
The curriculum comprises nine modules, including a 16-week internship, and the six-month Master's Thesis as final module.
The nine modules of the curriculum cover three groups of knowledge and its application. In group "Fundamentals" students are introduced to the field of EnviTox (module "Aspects of environmental research"), they gain fundamental knowledge of the movement of substances in environmental compartments (Environmental Chemistry), obtain insight into important molecular biological sciences (Biochemistry and Bioinformatics) and learn how to monitor chemical substances in different matrices (Environmental analytics).
The group "Effects" treats effects of pollutants on different organisms. The module "Biological interaction" covers the role of microbes in drinking water supply and waste water treatment, explains how pollutants are taken up by plants and animals and how we can use population structures of different keygroups to monitor the ecological state of ecosystems. The module "Effects on biological functions" directly deals with the effects of xenobiotics and other pollutants on cells, plants and animals.
Additional competencies related to the presentation of information, teamwork, information technologies and strategies to solve problems will be integrated in the courses with emphasis on multidisciplinarity.
During the practical year "Applied Environmental Toxicology" focuses on the European legislation regarding the use of xenobiotics and the implementation of monitoring, assessment and risk managing by the industry and other stakeholders. Furthermore, in a 16 week internship students are encouraged to get first working experiences in an industrial, administrational, advisory or scientific setting in Germany or abroad.
The Master's Programme will close with the Master's Thesis on current questions in Environmental Toxicology.

Application / Admission

Faculty Application Form

All applicants have to complete this Faculty application form. International students (all who did not do a Bachelor degree in Europe) must also complete an online application for the international office.

Application / Admission

You would like to be part of the EnviTox program? Great!

On this page you will find information on the application process. We devide between two applicant groups:

  1. Students from Germany, the EU or with a Bachelor degree of the EU
  2. International students with a bachelor degree outside of the EU

Please follow the instructions of your respective group below.

The study places for Environmental Toxicology are not limited. This implies that everyone, who fulfills ALL requirements will be accepted for the program. In the "application" step (which is form called the "equivalence assessment"), we check if you do fulfill those requirements. Afterwards you will get notified if you can proceed for the enrollment or not.

Application deadline: We highly recommend to apply before June, 15th.

Requirements

The formal requirements to apply for the EnviTox Master's programme include:

  • A University degree (BSc, MSc, University Diploma (e.g. Universitätsdiplom), State Examination (e.g. Staatsexamen)) in Biology, Chemistry, Water Science or Environmental Sciences in the Natural Science domain
    or
  • a degree from a University of Professional Education (e.g. BSc, MSc, Diploma (Fachhochschuldiplom, HBO diploma) in one of the above mentioned study programmes.

  • A german grade of at least 2.7 (the international grades will be translated during the application process)

  • At least 15 credits in two of the following three areas of expertise:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Environmental Sciences

  • Practical knowledge in biological and/or analytical laboratory methods

  • A practical bachelor thesis relevant for the field of Environmental Toxicology, equivalent in the standard of a Bachelorthesis in Biology/Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

  • An English certification of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with a level of at least B2
    (or IELTS 6.5 and higher).

Application for Students from Germany, the EU or with a Bachelor degree of the EU

If you are a German and EU student you can upload your documents to the online application platform of the office of student affairs (Application starts in June).

Those are the requiered documents:

  •  the filled  faculty application form
  •  your Transcript of records (incl. average grade and at least 150 ECTS)
  • an english language certificate with a B2 level (Abiturzeugnis or University course or IELTS or TOEFL)
  • if you have not finished your bachelors yet, a certification that your bachelor thesis is already registered, is needed

If you want to be sure that you can enroll before the lectures start, you should send in your documents before July, 15th. If you apply later than July 15th you will have to wait longer (due to vacation times).

After you have been accepted you can proceed with the enrollment process.

Lectures start in October. Even though we can check your documents before you finish your studies, you will have to be finished on the day of enrollment.

Instructions for the enrollment can be found here:

Online registration for the enrollment

If you have questions regarding the equivalence assessment, please contact our study program coordinator Sabina Marks.

Application for International students with a bachelor degree outside of the EU

The following documents for International students have to be uploaded in online applications portal of the international office:

  •  the filled  faculty application form
  • a translation of the degree certificates, made by an officially recognised translator in English, in case the original documents are not written in German or English;
  • copies of all transcripts or other academic records that give proof of the undergraduate studies including credits and grades achieved in each single subject;
  • A translation in English of the transcripts and records, in case the original documents are not written in German or English.
  •  your bachelor thesis in an pdf format.
  •  An english language certification of a language examination according to CEFR, with a level of B2 (or TOEFL Test with 90 points or more (itB) or IELTS Test with 6.5 points or more )

If English is an official language in your country of origin, it may be sufficient to submit proof that English was the language of instruction at school and university. However, if the level of English in the application appears to be too low, the admissions committee may require a certified English test (eg IELTS or TOELF) afterwards.

The lessons starts in mid October. If you want to make sure to be here in time for the lessons start, please apply as early as possible. The application portal opens on May, 1st. We highly recommend to apply before June, 15th.

Students who send in their documents after June, 15th will be processed later and the decision will be send out later (this is due to vacation times in Germany). This often leads to the fact that visa can not be organized until the end of the enrollment period.

If you have questions regarding the equivalence assessment, please contact our study program coordinator Sabina Marks or  Sandra Besch from the international office, who is responsible for the online application portal and the enrollment of the international students.
