Transferable Skills for Your Career

Successful academic careers require not only outstanding research results and a deep level of expertise in the respective academic fields but also a set of transferable skills.

Our Summer School supports doctoral researchers of the University of Duisburg-Essen with training of these key competencies. It aims at strengthening your self-confidence and coping skills, thus enabling you to better communicate your achievements within the academic community and to strategically develop your career path.

Our next Summer School will take place from 22 to 26 August 2022 as hybrid event (on-site workshops at the Essen campus plus online workshops).

Registration and Participation

The GC Plus Summer School is an annual offer for doctoral researchers of all subject fields at the UDE. Participation in our Summer School is free of charge. The language of all offers will be English, aiming to cultivate and raise awareness for intercultural and interdisciplinary issues and to address, in particular, doctoral researchers with an international background.

During the opening session and the workshops on site at Campus Essen, we will serve you with coffee, tea and water. We kindly ask you to bring your own food. The lunch break offers enough time for a meal in the dining hall.

FAQ about participating in our programmes can be found here.

The registration period for this event ended on 10 August.

Monday, 22 August 2022: ON-SITE OPENING

Joint session on support services as well as career opportunities for early career researchers and exchange

Date: Mon, 22 August 2022, 9.00–16.00 hrs (including lunch and coffee breaks)
Room: Campus Essen, S06 S00 B29
max. 80 participants

Doctoral candidates are often not aware of the wide range of support available to them at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), this is especially true for international candidates. Therefore, we aim at introducing you to the various support offers for doctoral researchers at the UDE during the first half of the day. There will be enough time for your questions.

After lunch we will continue with an input on career opportunities for researchers after finishing their doctorate. Finally, you will have the chance to exchange with the GC Plus team as well as your colleagues on different self-selected topics and better get to know each other.

The first day of our Summer School is designed to provide relevant information and to bring you into contact with other doctoral researchers, with their thoughts and possible hurdles they may have already encountered. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in the joint opening programme. You will surely gain valuable insights and get to know other colleagues. Although the main target group of the Summer School are doctoral researchers with an international background, we also invite German candidates to participate and have a lively exchange with their colleagues.
