Programme overview: winter semester 2020/21
In the winter semester 2020/21, we offer a programme of interdisciplinary workshops, career and information events for early career researchers in all career phases. Some of these events take place under the umbrella of the Research Academy Ruhr, thus encouraging exchange and networking within the UA Ruhr.
Starting a doctorate
Info event: "Heute Studentin! Morgen Doktorandin?"
Is a doctorate the right thing for me and what career opportunities does it offer? Female Master's students are invited to join the online info event "Promovieren! Wie geht das?" on 22 October 2020. The event is the first part of the series "Heute Studentin! Morgen Doktorandin?", which will be continued on 2 February 2021 with experience reports from female researchers who have completed their doctorate or are currently doing a doctorate. A registration is required by 8 October.
Events for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers
Home Trainig Days
Our online workshops for doctoral researchers will be continued in the winter semester. The upcoming dates and topics are:
- Speech expression and body language (26-27 October)
- Network strategies for female doctoral students (11-12 November)
- Career paths in the non-profit sector (9.12.2020)
- Fundamentals of science communication (10.-11.12.)
Dialogue
On 19 November, the Dialogue offers doctoral researchers of the UA Ruhr the opportunity to meet the managing director of the Hans Böckler Foundation. During a joint lunch, participants are invited to discuss with Michael Guggemos on the topic of "Working 4.0 - How does digitization change the world of work?
Applications are accepted until 4.11. The Dialogue will take place at the Technologiezentrum Ruhr, Bochum.
Wirtschaftskolleg
The Wirtschaftskolleg on 23 November 2020 offers a platform to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers where you can meet distinguished representatives from business and society and learn about the many possibilities of a career outside university.
Registration runs until 11 November. The Wirtschaftskolleg takes place at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
Postdoc Workshops
The three UA Ruhr universities offer a joint workshop programme for postdoctoral researchers within the Research Academy Ruhr. Topics in the winter semester 20/21 are e.g.:
- Leadership Skills for Postdocs (8-9 December)
- Professionell und überzeugend kommunizieren (25-26 November)
- Writing successful research proposals (16, 20 & 23 November)
- Berufungsverfahren auf Professuren (20-21 January)
On your way to a professorship
CoachingPLUS: seminars with individual coaching
Postdoctoral researchers who are already leading a junior research group, hold a junior professorship or are about to complete their habilitation will find a specially tailored offer within the Research Academy Ruhr. The CoachingPLUS programme combines seminars in small groups and individual coaching. The dates for the winter semester are
- Promotionen betreuen (8 October)
- Selbststeuerung und Mitarbeiterführung in wachsenden Teams (9–10 February)
- Training Berufungsverfahren (18–19 February).

Counselling and coaching
In a personal conversation, by phone or during an online consultation, we will be happy to advise you on questions regarding career planning, academic competencies or the doctoral
process. Special burdens or challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic can also be addressed in a coaching session.
