Mentoring in the Faculty of Physics

In the winter semester 2009/2010, the University of Duisburg-Essen introduced a comprehensive mentoring system with the aim of promoting student satisfaction and preventing students from dropping out of their studies.

The mentoring system represents one piece of the puzzle in the overall picture of the "Educational Equity in Focus (in German)" project, which aims to support students and improve teaching.

The philosophy behind the mentoring system is that experienced mentors guide students (mentees) throughout their studies. In this faculty, mentoring is realized by professors and permanent research assistants, who act as mentors and hold 1-2 mentee meetings per semester, where current problems in studies can be discussed in a relaxed atmosphere. More details can be found in the Moodle course Mentoring Physics.

It should be noted, however, that the mentoring system is not intended to close any subject-related gaps (for this purpose, there is the LUDI as well as numerous semester-accompanying tutorials), but to address problems in the study program in general.
