External legal counsel in cases of abuse of power

Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia have established a central external legal counseling service for victims of abuse of power. The service is intended for students, employees, and internal counseling and support services at public universities and university hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Services offered by the counseling service

  • Confidential, independent, and upon request anonymous initial legal consultation
  • Assistance in assessing the legal implications of incidents
  • Information on rights, obligations, and available channels for filing complaints and reporting incidents
  • Guidance on additional internal and external support services
  • Workshops and training sessions on complaint procedures and legal principles

The counseling center does not provide legal representation and does not investigate the facts of a case.

Objective

This service helps shed light on abuse of power, discrimination, and structural disadvantages within the academic system and provides accessible support to those affected. As such, the counseling center serves as an important complement to gender equality, diversity, and anti-discrimination initiatives at universities.
