Seeing with Different Eyes

  • 24.04.2026

The children’s conditions vary widely: some were born prematurely, others live with serious illnesses or disabilities. And yet they are full of energy – as demonstrated by photography students from the University of Duisburg-Essen in the exhibition “Seeing with Different Eyes.” Around 20 striking works are on display until May 28, 2026, at the premises of Novitas BKK (Zum Portsmouthplatz 24, 47051 Duisburg).

This is already the eleventh time the exhibition has been held. Each year, lecturer Ditmar Schädel leads a photography course within the “People-Centered Informatics and Psychology” (MIPSY) program. As part of the course, students visit families and create photographic portraits of children with disabilities as well as premature babies. In their daily lives, these families are supported by the association Bunter Kreis Duisburg.

For the students, the project offers insights into life realities that often lie beyond their own experience. At the same time, the exhibition aims to give these perspectives greater visibility in the public sphere. The photographs capture both the particular challenges of everyday life and the children’s strength and joy for life.
