Open Access Funding 2021

You publish - we support you!

In accordance with the DFG guidelines, the UL provides an OA publication fund in addition to the regular literature budget.
The aim is to support authors by assuming publication fees (e.g. Article Processing Charges: APCs) in Open Access publications (journals, monographs and compilations).

Funding of articles

The following funding conditions apply to Open Access funding for articles as of 01/01/2021:

Please note that the funding guidelines do NOT apply to the DEAL publishers Wiley and Springer Nature; information on this can be found under the publisher-specific funding conditions, as well as on UDE's memberships in e.g. MDPI and Frontiers.

Full funding is available if the following criteria are met:

  • You are a member of the University of Duisburg-Essen as submitting author or as corresponding author responsible for paying article processing fees in an Open Access journal.

  • The article is published in a journal whose articles are all accessible to users free of charge via the Internet as soon as they appear ("genuine open access journal" listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals) and which applies strict quality assurance procedures that are recognized in the respective subject.

  • Funding cannot be provided for publications that originated within bonus programs.

  • Publication fees may not exceed 2,000 EUR incl. 19% VAT per article for full funding.

  • Please note the information on the possibility of partial funding from 2021!

  • The articles must contain a reference to the funding (e.g. "We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Duisburg-Essen.").

Please email the original invoice to openaccess.ub@uni-due.de.
The UL will take care of the payment. Invoices will be processed in the order of receipt until the funds provided for this purpose from the publication fund have been exhausted.

Please note that no VAT may be shown on a foreign invoice; the publisher may require the VAT ID of the UDE (DE 811 272 995) for this purpose.

New from 2021, we offer you support in the form of partial funding:

  • As a member of the University of Duisburg-Essen, you are responsible as submitting author or as corresponding author for the payment of article processing fees in an Open Access journal.

  • For publication fees above €2,000, you can request a refund of 50% or a maximum of €2,000 of the fees via this form after paying the invoice.
Note: We recommend that you contact the publisher and ask for a reduction of the fees in order to receive full funding. We will be happy to assist you in this regard.

  • The articles must contain a reference to the support (e.g. "We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Duisburg-Essen.").

Please send the original invoice with the completed form by email to openaccess.ub@uni-due.de.
The UB will then reimburse the pro-rata funding. Invoices will be processed in the order of receipt until the funds provided for this purpose from the publication fund have been exhausted.

Please note that no VAT may be shown on a foreign invoice; the publisher may require the VAT ID of the UDE (DE 811 272 995) for this purpose.

Funding of monographs

The following guidelines apply to funding monographs or collective works from the Open Access Monographs Publication Fund:

Members of the UDE are eligible for funding as authors or editors .

Scope of funding

  • The funding amount per publication is 4,500 € (gross).
In the event of higher expenditure due to page size, a large number of illustrations and tables or high costs for image rights or licenses, this sum can be increased to a maximum of 6,000 € (gross).
  • Only costs for a genuine open-access publication will be funded; costs for a simultaneous print edition will not be funded.
  • Pro rata funding is possible.
  • The funding is limited to one publication per author per funding year.
  • A commitment for funding can only be guaranteed for a period of up to 12 months in order not to commit funds too long-term.

Quality assurance

  • Quality assurance must be granted (e.g. through peer review, peer reviewers, editors, scientific editing, etc.).
This is common for publishers listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB).

Legal information

  • The publication is made under an Open Access compliant license, a CC-BY license is recommended. In addition, the publications receive Persistent Identifiers, i.e. a DOI or URN.
  • The rights to illustrations and other third party material have been clarified.
  • Long-term archiving must be guaranteed (e.g. via the German National Library)

Legal notice / Imprint

  • Information on Open Access and the CC license is clearly contained in the imprint of the online and print editions.
  • Upon publication, the publications (print and online editions) contain a note that they were funded by the UDE publication fund.

The funded publications are made available on the UDE document server DuEPublico.

Pleas note in addition:

The publisher must submit a cost calculation; a flat-rate Open Access fee cannot be accepted.
