Ready for FISU
- 08.07.2025
He speaks five languages, loves sports, and despite being close to completing his master's degree in mechanical engineering, still finds time to volunteer: Amal Vadakke Mudappattu from India will be volunteering at the FISU World University Games from July 16 to 27. We spoke with the 28-year-old student.
How do you become a volunteer for the FISU World University Games?
It's easy, just apply.
I enjoy helping others. I've been involved in volunteer work since I was at school, with various NGOs and in school and student programs. I've also worked at major sporting events: last year, I was a volunteer at the European Football Championship. In Düsseldorf, I was responsible for ticket control and spectator admission. That's where I found out about the FISU World University Games. I was immediately interested.
What motivates you?
I like networking and solving problems. When things get chaotic or challenging, I like to take responsibility to get everything back on track. That's why large events like the FISU Games appeal to me so much: lots of people come together. You have to act fast, stay flexible, and coordinate with others – because plans can shift at any time.
It's great that in a few weeks I'll be part of a global event and get to know people from different cultures.
You speak five languages. Which ones?
I speak and understand English, German, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil – and I would like to learn Spanish.
And you're also a sports fan ...
Absolutely. I love soccer – Manchester United is my absolute favorite club – and cricket, which I play myself. Here in Germany, I play for VfB Gelsenkirchen in the Bundesliga.
What will you be doing as a volunteer at the FISU Games?
I will be working in volunteer management. I was able to specify my preferred area in advance, but I don't know exactly what my tasks will be yet. I hope we will receive detailed instructions soon.
Which sport would you like to participate in during the FISU Games?
Basketball.
