Hanau, 19 February 2020: A man shot and killed nine people at several locations and seriously injured others. His motive: a deeply rooted racist and far-right ideology. Said Etris Hashemi survived the attack, whilst his younger brother died. He recounts his experiences in the book “The Day I Was Supposed to Die. How the terror in Hanau changed my life forever”. On 21 April, Said Etris Hashemi will be a guest at the UDE.

At the invitation of the UDE’s Anti-Discrimination Officer and in cooperation with the City of Essen’s Municipal Integration Centre, he will read from his autobiographical work, which has become a bestseller and moved many readers. In it, Said Etris Hashemi explores key issues relating to discrimination, remembrance and social responsibility, and invites the audience to reflect and join in the discussion.

The reading will take place from 6 pm to 8 pm in the library hall on the Essen campus and is part of the UA Ruhr’s annual anti-discrimination programme. The event is open to all members of the UA Ruhr (RUB, TU Dortmund, UDE).

The event is funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
