After several weeks of intensive brainstorming, things are now taking shape: with the construction workshop from 22 to 24 April, the Campus · Street · Lab project is moving into its next phase – and with it, out of the planning room and into the urban space. Everyone who would like to help shape the Essen campus is invited to take part.
Following the vision-building session in February and the co-design workshop in March, during which initial concepts for the future of Universitätsstraße were developed collaboratively, the focus is now on implementation. The aim is not merely to discuss ideas, but to test them out directly on site. As part of the three-day construction workshop, the first urban interventions – that is, temporary elements designed to enhance the public space – are being created on Universitätsstraße.
Sketches and designs give way to concrete structures: gathering spaces, greenery, play areas and installations take shape. Together, we build, remove paving and experiment. Materials are reused, ideas are tested on a 1:1 scale, and the space is developed step by step.
The project is conceived as an open-ended process: the results of the workshops held so far form the basis, whilst at the same time leaving room for new ideas and spontaneous developments. This creates a dynamic real-world laboratory that demonstrates how urban space can be shaped collaboratively.
The construction workshop is open to students, staff at the University of Duisburg-Essen and anyone else who is interested – regardless of their field of study or prior experience. You can join in at any time; no DIY experience is required. Those who were unable to attend the first two workshops are still very welcome to take part. Food and drinks will be provided. To help us plan, please register in advance.
A special highlight is scheduled for Friday, 24 April: the Campus · Street · Lab will be officially opened from 2 pm. Visitors can look forward to drinks and music provided by a DJ collective from Essen. No registration is required.
