Long Night of Discoveries

  • 29.06.2026

Here, lightning crackles through a piece of wood; there, the Imperial March from Star Wars rings out, played using Tesla coils; and over there, the maglev train whizzes round its track. Metal components produced using 3D printing; a wind tunnel simulating conditions on the surface of Mars. There was certainly no shortage of highlights during the UDE’s first participation in ExtraSchicht. The laboratory tours proved particularly popular with visitors of all ages.

The atmosphere on the evening of the ExtraSchicht was great amongst both staff and visitors – despite the exceptionally hot temperatures lasting late into the night. The laboratory and technical tours were very well received, and quite a few people looked on with a touch of envy at the ice-cold nitrogen cooling the maglev train down to operating temperature.

Rector Prof. Dr Barbara Albert visited many of the laboratories and halls herself, as well as attending the concert by the UDE BigBandits. She explicitly thanked the organising team, led by Dr Miriam Böhm, and all the staff who helped to organise the ExtraSchicht for their tremendous commitment.
