DUHN Summer School
Ukrainian Students Visit UDE
- 06.07.2026
Air raid sirens instead of seminars, power outages instead of lectures: For students and lecturers in Ukraine, this has been part of everyday life since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Despite these extremely difficult conditions, many universities have managed to keep teaching and research going, often in a digital format. To support Ukrainian higher education and strengthen academic exchange, the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is part of the German-Ukrainian University Network (DUHN). From 6 to 14 July, 20 students and lecturers from Kharkiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia and Kryvyi Rih are visiting UDE for a summer school.
The students, aged between 18 and 22, are studying German Studies, Chemistry or Physics. At UDE’s Essen campus, they take part in seminars on language, art, literature and translation, complete laboratory practicals and exchange ideas with UDE students and researchers. As part of the project Student Voices about Germany, they explore and reflect on their perspectives on life in Germany and the Ruhr region. Excursions also give them the opportunity to get to know the city of Essen and the surrounding region.
