Does the doctor strike me as competent? Does she inspire confidence in me? Does the medication seem well-tolerated? Expectations have a major impact in medicine. On the MS Wissenschaft, a floating science centre, visitors can see and experience, amongst other attractions, an exhibit from the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Collaborative Research Centre ‘Treatment Expectation’. On 7 and 8 July, the exhibition ship will be moored in Duisburg’s inner harbour – this year’s theme is ‘The Medicine of Tomorrow’. Admission is free; the exhibition is open on both days from 10 am to 6.30 pm.
A gangway leads into the MS Wissenschaft, which is moored for two days at the Inner Harbour quay, opposite the Museum of Culture and City History. Inside – where the temperature is comfortably controlled by air conditioning – visitors can try out 29 exhibits, ranging from ‘A’ for ‘Active Implants’ to ‘Z’ for ‘Cells (German: Zellen) with a wow factor’.
Dr Livia Asan and Dr Lorenz Peters, team members of the Collaborative Research Centre ‘Treatment Expectation’, will be on board on 7 July from 4 pm to 5 pm. In an engaging, interactive talk, they will explain their exhibit, which allows everyone to test their personal expectations. They will also use everyday examples to offer tips on how to activate the body’s own healing mechanisms and thus reduce unwanted side effects of treatments. Doors open at 3.30 pm. The event is free of charge. No registration is required.
The exhibition on the MS Wissenschaft is designed to be suitable for children aged 12 and over, teenagers and adults. There is a special audio tour for younger children.
Information for wheelchair users:
A stairlift with a maximum load of 225 kg and a platform size of 80 x 90 cm is available. A lightweight wheelchair (seat width 43 cm) can be provided in the exhibition. There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet. As conditions at the venue vary from place to place, wheelchair users are asked to book in advance by calling +49 172 1765936.
