Description

Graduates of the Master's program "Computer Engineering" are expected to perform demanding conceptual and innovation-oriented tasks in engineering-oriented computer science in industry, or to make independent scientific contributions in research, and later in their professional life also to assume managerial functions. To this end, students broaden their knowledge of computer science technologies and application skills, based on a basic and method-oriented bachelor's degree program, and acquire in-depth knowledge of the state of research in specific subfields. In the design of their studies, students have the choice between two profiles. Modules of the profile "Intelligent Networked Systems" are for example Internet of Things, Context Adaptive Systems, Neuroinformatics and Organic Computing as well as Distributed Systems. Modules of the profile "Interactive Systems and Visualization" are for example Graphical Data Processing and Visualization, Interactive Systems, Design of Interactive Teaching/Learning Systems, Multimedia Systems or Scientific Visualization. In addition, there is a compulsory part of in-depth modules of Computer Engineering common to both profiles, namely Component- and Pattern-based Software Development, Development of Secure Software and Formal Specification of Software Systems. In a seminar, students learn to work through and present scientific topics, a practical project leads to the ability to work in groups on the basis of a small project from one of the two profiles, and through the master's thesis, students acquire the ability to work independently in a scientific manner. Students also learn to recognize new scientific methods and findings in engineering informatics and to apply them to solve a problem. This prepares graduates primarily for the following professional fields:

  • Research of innovative technologies of computer science in the field of "Intelligent Networked Systems" or "Interactive Systems and Visualization".
  • Transfer of innovative technologies from these areas into industrial practice
  • Requirement analysis and conception of application-specific systems from the above-mentioned profiles, as well as leadership function in the realization and testing of these systems.

The graduates

  • master advanced fundamentals in mathematical, scientific or engineering subjects.
  • have specialized knowledge and computer science concepts, methods, programming environments for intelligent, networked systems.
  • are qualified to decide between the two possible profiles as well as to choose from the elective subjects through which students can follow their inclinations to qualify for a profession or an academic career.
  • have a deepened general education with a strengthening of linguistic competence in German and English, as well as a strengthening of professional aptitude through the learning of teamwork and communication skills.
  • have gained experience in independently working on a problem from the field of computer engineering or engineering sciences within a given time limit using scientific methods and presenting it in an understandable way.

Admission

Admission requirements

  • completion of a Bachelor's degree in the ISE program with an overall grade of 2.5 or better or
  • equivalent degree from another German or foreign university with an average grade of 2.5 or better. The assessment of equivalence is made by the examination board.

If the admission requirements are not fulfilled according to paragraph 2 or if a change of the field of study within the study program "ISE" takes place during the transition from Bachelor to Master, the examination board can combine the admission to the Master program with the condition to prove certain knowledge until the registration of the Master thesis. The type and extent of these requirements are determined individually by the examination board on the basis of the course content completed as part of the previous degree. The extent of the requirements is up to 2 courses.

Further information regarding admission requirements can be found on the pages of the study program "ISE".

Admission

Provided that the admission requirements are met, this Master study course has unrestricted admission (number of student places is not limited). Enrollment takes place during the enrollment period at the student registrar’s office at Campus Duisburg. [forms and further information]

For national applicants the following applies until further notice:
National applicants for the ISE Bachelor's or ISE Master's program should submit their Abitur/Bachelor's or comparable degree certificates to the ISE Examination Committee for confirmation of the special enrollment requirements and foreign language skills. This certificate must be presented at the time of enrollment.

General Information

Living & Studying at the University of Duisburg-Essen

Semester

The academic year is divided into semesters.

  • Winter semester: from October to March
  • Summer semester: from April to September

Lecture period

The winter lecture period usually starts in mid-October and ends in mid-February. In summer, the lecture period usually starts in mid-April and ends in July. During the winter semester there is a break of about two weeks during the Christmas holidays.

Examination phase

The examination phase begins about one week after the end of the lecture period and lasts about seven weeks.

Semester fee

All students have to pay a semester fee (social contribution) of about 320,- Euro per semester. You can find the current amount here. The social contribution includes, among other things, a semester ticket for public transportation in North Rhine-Westphalia and discounts on meals in the university's canteen and cafeteria.

Living expenses

We recommend to consider approximately 800 to 1000 Euro of personal expenses per month.

Accommodation

Accommodation is possible in dormitories of the Studierendenwerk and in premises of the free housing market. The rent in a room in a student dormitory is about 300,- Euro per month. You can find more information about housing options here.

December 2021Aashish Agarwal

"I studied masters in Computer Engineering (ISE) at the university. The course provides students to pick subjects from a wide range of catalogues according to their interests. I am thankful to the great faculty who helped me to achieve a specialization in Machine Learning.

The course introduced basics and also guided me to learn the advanced concepts in the area of Natural Language Processing. Although the course requires B2 German proficiency, however, the majority of the subjects can still be studied in English. The Univerity continually promotes education and provides scholarships to students every year (Deutschland Stipendium). I am glad to receive the same two times in a row. The master's study helped me in getting internships and now a full-time job in an MNC.

Overall I am satisfied with the course of study, and would recommend it to any student interested in the field of Computer Engineering and AI."
