Planning the final thesis
- You should start looking around and applying to your chosen department approximately one semester before you plan to enrol.
- If in doubt, apply to more than one chair, as not every chair always has free capacity.
- Check the general conditions of the chair in good time (e.g. are there fixed application periods and deadlines?).
- If you would like to write an external thesis (in collaboration with a company), you will still need a chair to supervise you. Enquire about this as soon as possible. In the case of external theses, also pay attention to the general conditions specified by the company (e.g. confidentiality clauses).
- Check whether things like missing credits or an open third attempt are standing in the way of your degree.
- Make sure you make a good first impression: Contact the chair in the prescribed manner - you can usually find information on this on the chair's website. The cover letter should fulfil the relevant requirements. For example, the grade point average, possibly a CV and a letter of motivation are usually required.
Tips & Help
- When deciding in favour of or against a chair, it can be helpful to ask fellow students what they can tell you.
- If you realise early on that you are particularly interested in a department, it can be worthwhile to get a first impression of it during research projects or similar.
- Before registering, you should draw up a schedule with a sufficient buffer, e.g. in case you fall ill in between.
- Choose a topic that interests you - especially for Master's thesis. After all, you have to work on the topic for three or six months.
- If you have any problems, you should seek help immediately, e.g. from your advisor.
- You can find further tips on writing theses in the emergency kit, for example courses from the university library on source research and literature management.
